Statesmen Top No. 18 Davidson-Davie on Sophomore Day

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team celebrated Sophomore Day in style, holding off No. 18 Davidson-Davie Community College in a statement victory over the nationally ranked NJCAA Division II opponent.

Before tip-off, the program honored its sophomore class — Richard Agbo, Marcus Banks, Doyle Brown, Jermaine Coston Jr., Dove Fishburne, Miguel Martinez, Andy Ramirez, and Emmanuel Vonhm — for their dedication and contributions to Richard Bland over the past two seasons. The group has played a pivotal role in building the team's competitive identity, and Saturday's performance reflected their leadership.

Richard Bland wasted no time setting the tone. Sophomore guard Marcus Banks ignited the crowd early, drilling a three-pointer to give the Statesmen the first lead of the game. The shot sparked an energetic start, as RBC executed on both ends of the floor and matched the intensity of the nationally ranked opponent.

The Statesmen maintained composure throughout a tightly contested matchup, responding to every Davidson-Davie push with poise and timely shot-making. Defensive stops down the stretch and key contributions from the sophomore class helped Richard Bland protect its home court. The victory was especially historic, as Richard Bland had never beaten Davidson-Davie Community College before, making the performance by the sophomore class all the more memorable.

Sophomore Jermaine Coston Jr. led the way for Richard Bland, pouring in a team-high, 27 points and setting the tone with his aggressive play on both ends of the floor grabbing nine rebounds. Aleksandar Bihler contributed 19 points off the bench, along with three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Emmanuel Vonhm and Doyle Brown added nine points each, while Dove Fishburne had six, and Marcus Banks three. Jahi Bowden grabbed five boards, while earning four assists and four steals.

The Statesmen will face the Panthers of Denmark Technical College next, on Friday, February 27th at 7pm, followed by a 3pm contest with USC Salkehatchie on Saturday, February 28th.
