Statesmen Showcase Defensive Dominance in Home Win, Face Conference Challenge

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College men's basketball team posted a split during its recent two-game home stand, highlighted by a commanding nonconference victory before facing a challenging conference matchup. The Statesmen now stand at 4–6 overall and 0–2 in conference play.

Richard Bland opened the week in emphatic fashion on January 7, rolling past Tidewater Community College 83–46. The Statesmen set the tone early with an explosive first half, scoring 51 points and building a 51–22 advantage at the break. RBC controlled the game on both ends, forcing 22 turnovers, collecting 20 steals, and recording seven blocks in a dominant defensive effort.

Jermaine Coston Jr. led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Jahi Bowden added 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting, along with five assists and four steals. Andy Ramirez contributed 16 points and five steals, and Doyle Brown chipped in 10 points and six rebounds as the Statesmen showcased balanced scoring and ball movement, finishing with 19 assists.

On January 10, Richard Bland returned to the court for a conference matchup against Cape Fear Community College, falling 63-75. The Statesmen stayed competitive throughout, trailing just 27-32 at halftime before Cape Fear pulled away in the second half.

Doyle Brown paced RBC with a game-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the field and knocking down three three-pointers. Emmanuel Vonhm provided a strong lift off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds, while Andy Ramirez added 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Jermaine Coston Jr. anchored the interior with 13 rebounds and four blocks.

Despite out-rebounding Cape Fear 38–35 and recording 17 assists, RBC struggled to convert consistently from long range and at the free-throw line down the stretch.

The Statesmen will look to carry the momentum from their dominant defensive performance against Tidewater as they continue conference play.

RBC returns to action at home on Friday, January 16th when they face off against USC Salkehatchie at 7pm, followed by a 2pm contest versus Denmark Technical College at home on Saturday, January 17th.
