Second-Half Surge Sinks Statesmen Against Cape Fear

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Women's Soccer team held strong through the opening half but could not withstand a relentless second-half push from Cape Fear Community College, falling 0-5 on Saturday afternoon at Willcox Field. With the result, the Statesmen move to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Region 10 play.

The match began with both sides trading possessions in a scoreless first half. Richard Bland generated several promising opportunities, including shots from Sara Sparks and Alanjane Granger, but neither side could find the breakthrough before the halftime whistle. Cape Fear broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute and went on to score four more goals over a 34-minute span to seal the contest.

Despite the setback, the Statesmen showed determination throughout. Freshman forward Rhianna Pena was active in the attack with a team-high three shots, one on frame, while Ingrid Garcia tested the Cape Fear keeper with the other of RBC's two shots on target. Goalkeeper Piper Whitney finished with three saves while facing consistent pressure.

Richard Bland totaled eight shots, including four corner kicks, while limiting Cape Fear to just five attempts in the first half before the visitors broke through after the break.

The Statesmen will look to regroup quickly as they return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 8th, hosting Region 10 rival Wake Technical Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3pm. This game will take part in the "Guard The Grove" themed games. Wear neon colors and come out and support the Statesmen!
