Early Offense Not Enough as Statesmen Fall at Bryant & Stratton

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Baseball team jumped out to a fast start on the road Wednesday afternoon, but a big middle innings surge by Bryant & Stratton College (VA) proved too much to overcome in a 6-16 loss.

The Statesmen wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first, as Henry Stewart launched a three-run home run to give RBC an early 3-0 advantage. Richard Bland continued to apply pressure in the second inning, adding two more runs behind a RBI single from Donavan Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Carson Seely to extend the lead to 5-1. However, Bryant & Stratton responded in a big way in the second inning, plating five runs to even the score, and continued to build momentum throughout the game. The home team added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, highlighted by multiple home runs, to pull away.

Johnson led the Statesmen offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Stewart finished with three RBI on his first-inning homer, while Cam Lamb and Warren Landreth each collected two hits. On the mound, Nate Riggs took the loss, while Matthew Gentry and Michael Keyes also saw action in relief.

Richard Bland will next host Lenoir Community College on Saturday, April 18th for games one and two of the three-game series with the Lancers, in a 12pm doubleheader. Game three will take place at Lenoir Community College on Sunday, April 19th at 1pm.
