SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Baseball team dropped all three games of a weekend conference series against Fayetteville Technical Community College, falling 2-14, 1-2, and 1-4 at Petersburg Sports Complex.
In game one, the Statesmen struggled to contain Fayetteville Tech's explosive offense as the visitors plated 14 runs on 13 hits. After two scoreless innings, Fayetteville Tech broke through in the third and never looked back, highlighted by multiple home runs from the Trojans. A seven-run eighth inning put the game out of reach. Richard Bland's offense was limited to just three hits, but Sam Gupta provided a bright spot with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, scoring Henry Stewart. On the mound, Matthew Gentry took the loss, striking out two and walking two over five innings.
In game two, the Statesmen bounced back with a strong pitching performance but came up just short in a tightly contested matchup. The Trojans scored both of its runs in the first inning on a two-RBI double, and that proved to be the difference. Richard Bland answered in the sixth when Sam Gupta drove in Henry Stewart with an RBI single, but the Statesmen were unable to find the equalizer. Charlie Hogan delivered an impressive relief outing, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.
In game three, the series finale, Fayetteville Tech used timely hitting and capitalized on a pair of errors to secure the sweep. The visitors scored early on a wild pitch and added two runs in the fourth inning to take control. Richard Bland's lone run came in the fourth on a solo home run by Drew Davis. Despite recording five hits, the Statesmen struck out 15 times against Fayetteville Tech's pitching staff. Nate Riggs took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs (one earned) over five innings. Hayden Black and Luke Sweeney came in for relief for the Statesmen.
The Statesmen next host Wake Technical Community College on Tuesday, March 17th in a single, 3pm contest.
