Statesmen Rally Falls Short in Loss to Raptors
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Baseball team mounted a late offensive surge but ultimately fell short in a high-scoring contest, dropping a 13-20 decision to Montgomery College.
Montgomery jumped out to an early advantage, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning and continuing to add to the lead through the middle innings. The Raptors used multiple big hits, including several home runs, to build a 1-13 lead by the end of the fourth inning. The Statesmen began to chip away in the sixth inning. Vincent Howald sparked the rally with a two-run home run, and later in the inning Dalevon Smith delivered the biggest blow of the game for RBC, launching a grand slam to left field to bring the Statesmen back within striking distance.
Richard Bland continued the comeback effort in the seventh. Rhett Boyer singled to start the rally before Warren Landreth crushed a two-run homer to left field. Later in the inning, Carson Seely added a RBI single as the Statesmen cut further into the deficit. In the eighth inning, RBC again produced offense when Taloa Moefaauo singled and later scored alongside Howald on Landreth's two-run double to left field, trimming the Montgomery lead to six runs. Despite the late push, the Statesmen were unable to complete the comeback. Montgomery added insurance runs in the eighth inning and held off Richard Bland in the ninth to secure the win.
Landreth led the RBC offense with a home run and a double while driving in multiple runs. Smith's grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning for the Statesmen, while Howald also contributed with a two-run homer. Richard Bland finished the game with 13 runs on multiple key extra-base hits but could not overcome Montgomery's early offensive outburst.
The Statesmen will look to bounce back in their next outing when they host Fayetteville Technical Community College on Saturday, March 14th in a 2pm doubleheader, and Sunday, March 15th at 1pm.
