Statesmen Take One of Three in Series Against Lancers

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Baseball team split the opening two games of a three-game series at Lenoir Community College on Saturday, falling 1-11 in the opener before bouncing back with an 8–4 victory in game two.

 

In game one, Lenoir Community College used a big first inning to take control early and went on to defeat the Statesmen 1-11 in a five-inning contest. The hosts plated five runs in the opening frame and added two more in the fourth before putting the game away with four runs in the fifth. Richard Bland's lone run came in the second inning when Cam Lamb launched a solo home run to left field. Lamb accounted for the Statesmen's only RBI of the game. Myles Holmes and Henry Stewart each added singles as Richard Bland finished with three hits. On the mound, Hayden Black took the loss after allowing five runs in the first inning. Caden Thistle, Alvaro Aponte, and Jaiden Michael also saw time on the mound for the Statesmen.

 

In game two, The Statesmen responded in game two with a strong offensive showing, scoring six runs in the first inning on their way to an 8-4 victory. Richard Bland wasted no time getting started. Cam Lamb drove in two runs with an RBI single, and Henry Stewart followed with a three-run homer to highlight the big opening frame. Dalevon Smith later added an RBI double to cap the six-run inning. The Statesmen added another run in the second when Myles Holmes hit a solo home run to left field. After Lenoir trimmed the deficit to 7–4 early, Richard Bland added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Rhett Boyer delivered an RBI single. Boyer led the offense with three hits, while Holmes, Lamb, Stewart, and Smith each drove in runs. Stewart finished with a team-high three RBIs. On the mound, Matthew Gentry started the game before Charlie Hogan delivered an impressive relief appearance. Hogan tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out six to earn the win.

 

In game three, Lenoir Community College secured the series with a 1-9 victory in Sunday's finale. Lenoir opened the scoring in the first inning and added two runs in the fifth to extend the lead. The visitors continued to build their advantage with runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and a three-run ninth inning. Richard Bland's lone run came in the eighth inning when Carson Seely delivered an RBI single to score Vincent Howald. Howald led the Statesmen offensively with two hits, while Seely and Drew Davis each added hits. On the mound, Nate Riggs started for Richard Bland and took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned). Luke Sweeney, David Smith, and Michael Keyes also appeared in relief.

 

The Statesmen (8-11, 5-7) next travel to Montgomery College (MD) on Wednesday, March 11th for a 2pm non-conference game.
