Statesmen Take Series Opener, Drop Final Two at Robeson

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Baseball team opened its three-game road series in dominant fashion before falling in the final two contests against Robeson Community College in Lumberton, North Carolina.

In game one, the Statesmen set the tone early in the series with an 11-0 shutout victory behind strong pitching and timely hitting. After a scoreless first inning, RBC broke through in the second when Cam Lamb delivered an inside-the-park home run to spark the offense. The Statesmen added three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Rhett Boyer, and continued to build their lead with multi-run frames in the fifth and sixth innings. RBC tallied 11 runs on six hits, capitalizing on four Robeson errors. Boyer finished with three RBI, while Lamb drove in two and Myles Holmes added two RBI and scored three runs. Joseph Karpovich also plated a pair in the sixth inning. On the mound, Matthew Gentry was dominant, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. David Smith closed out the final inning to secure the shutout as the Statesmen limited Robeson to just three hits.

In game two, the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, Robeson used a three-run third inning to seize control and even the series with a 2-6 win. RBC struck first in the third on an RBI single by Holmes, and later added another run in the fifth on a base hit from Donavan Johnson. However, Robeson responded with timely hitting and took advantage of seven walks issued by Statesmen pitching. Dalevon Smith scored both RBC runs, while Holmes and Johnson each drove in one. The Statesmen recorded six hits but stranded 11 runners on base. Nate Riggs made the start, working three innings, and Charlie Hogan was tagged with the loss. Luke Sweeney provided 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

In the series finale, RBC jumped ahead early but could not overcome a big fourth inning from Robeson in a 6-10 setback. The Statesmen opened the scoring in the third when Boyer doubled home two runs. Robeson answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and broke the game open with a six-run fourth frame. RBC continued to battle, plating two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Holmes, Boyer, Dalevon Smith, Lucas De Cordova, and Warren Landreth each recorded RBI in the contest. Despite drawing nine walks, the Statesmen were unable to fully close the gap as Robeson finished with nine hits and six stolen bases.

Richard Bland moves forward looking to regroup after the road series, showing flashes of offensive production. The Statesmen (6-9, 4-5) will next host Camp Community College on Wednesday, March 4th in a single, 3pm game, followed by a single 3pm game against Virginia Peninsula Community College on Thursday, March 5th.
