Statesmen Drop Two in Midweek Action
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College baseball team dropped a pair of contests this week, falling 6-8 on the road to Louisburg College on February 18th before suffering a 3-14 setback at home against Lansing Community College on February 19th.
On February 18th, the Statesmen battled back-and-forth with Louisburg but were undone by a decisive five-run seventh inning in a 6-8 loss. RBC struck first in the third when Donavan Johnson delivered an RBI single to score Warren Landreth. After Louisburg answered with two runs in the bottom half, the Statesmen regained the lead in the fourth. A hit-by-pitch forced in one run before Sam Gupta grounded out to plate another, giving Richard Bland a 3-2 advantage. The Hurricanes tied the game on a solo home run in the fifth, but RBC continued to apply pressure. In the seventh, Rhett Boyer reached on an error that allowed Myles Holmes to score, putting the Statesmen back on top, 4-3. Louisburg responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on an error, a balk, and timely hits to seize a 4-8 lead. Richard Bland refused to go out quietly. Holmes stole home in the ninth, and Carson Seely added a RBI single to cut the deficit to two, but the late rally fell short. Johnson finished 2-for-5 with a RBI and a stolen base, while Holmes scored twice and added a double. Carson Seely provided a key RBI in the ninth. On the mound, Matthew Gentry tossed two scoreless innings to start the game, striking out two.
On February 19th, a competitive contest through four innings unraveled in the fifth as Lansing plated 11 runs to pull away for a 3-14 win. After Lansing scored three in the third, the Statesmen answered in the fourth. Lucas De Cordova drew a bases-loaded walk to score Rhett Boyer, while sacrifice flies from Taloa Moefaauo and Joey Todd brought home two more runs to tie the game at 3-3. Lansing broke the tie with an explosive fifth inning, taking advantage of walks, hit batters, and defensive miscues to surge ahead. RBC managed four hits in the contest, with Myles Holmes, Rhett Boyer, Sam Gupta, and Carson Seely each recording one. Drew Davis started on the mound and worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts before Lansing's offense found momentum against the bullpen.
Richard Bland next travels to Pitt Community College on Friday, February 20th for game one of the series with the Bulldogs, beginning at 5pm. Games two and three will take place on Saturday, February 21st in a 1pm doubleheader.
