Richard Bland Claims 2-1 Series Win to Open Conference Play
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — Richard Bland College Baseball traveled to Southeastern Community College-Whiteville over the weekend for the conference opening series with the Rams Friday and Saturday afternoon. After completion of the weekend, the Statesmen move to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in conference play.
In game one, a walk-off left Richard Bland College on the wrong end of a 9-12 defeat to the Rams. The game was tied at nine in the bottom of the ninth when the Rams homered to left field, scoring three runs. Richard Bland collected 13 hits and Southeastern CC had 12 in the game. Richard Bland was the first to get on the board, in the second inning when Warren Landreth was struck by a pitch, plating one run across. Southeastern flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring eight runs on five hits to take the lead, 1-8. The Rams also hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Richard Bland scored one run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to center field by Myles Holmes. The Statesmen tied the game in the top of the ninth thanks to a single by Sam Gupta, a ground out by Lucas De Cordova, a walk by Carson Seely, a walk by Holmes, and a single by Joseph Karpovich. Donavan Johnson led RBC with three hits in three at bats. Hayden Black led things off on the hill for Richard Bland. The pitcher allowed five hits and two runs over two and one-third innings, striking out four and walking none. Aiden Pool pitched three innings in relief. Poole surrendered three hits and one run while striking out three and walking one. Matthew Gentry took the loss. The pitcher went one-third of an inning, giving up three runs (two earned) on one hit, striking out none and walking one.
In game two, Richard Bland easily dispatched the Rams on Saturday, 13-3. RBC jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Donavan Johnson tripled, scoring one run, Rhett Boyer doubled, scoring one run, Joseph Karpovich drew a walk, scoring one run, and Taloa Moefaauo singled, scoring two runs. The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a home run to left field. The Statesmen added five more runs in the top of the third inning on four hits. Henry Stewart hit a solo home run to left field, De Cordova singled, scoring one run, Johnson doubled, scoring two runs, and Boyer singled, scoring one run. Richard Bland amassed 10 hits in the game. Luke Sweeney earned the win for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs over three innings, striking out two and walking one. Nate Riggs collected the save.
In game three, Myles Holmes drove in four runs on four hits to lead Richard Bland past the Rams, 11-5. Holmes singled in the second scoring two, hit a solo home run to right field in the fifth scoring one run, and singled in the sixth scoring one run. The Statesmen opened the scoring in the first after Donavan Johnson doubled, scoring one run. The Rams jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first when a single and a double scored three total runs. The Statesmen captured the lead, 5-3, in the top of the second when a wild pitch scored on run, Holmes singled scoring two runs, and Johnson singled scoring one run. RBC added two more runs in the top of the fifth on two hits, including a Holmes solo home run, and a Moefaauo single. Charlie Hogan earned the win for Richard Bland. The pitcher surrendered one hit and zero runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking two. Ryan Paul opened the game for the Statesmen. The righty allowed four hits and three runs over one-third of an inning, striking out none and walking one. David Smith collected the save. Caden Thistle appeared in relief for RBC.
Richard Bland next travels to Louisburg College on Wednesday, February 18th for a single, 3pm non-conference game with the Hurricanes.
