Statesmen Best Eagles in Non-Conference Showdown
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — Richard Bland College Baseball held off a late push from Wake Technical Community College to secure a 12-10 road victory on February 11th at NMAC – Holly Springs. The Statesmen built steady offensive momentum throughout the game, scoring in seven different innings and capitalizing on Wake Tech's three errors. Despite Wake Tech plating four runs in the ninth, Richard Bland's balanced offense and timely hitting proved enough to close out the win.
Despite falling down by six runs in the ninth inning, Wake Tech closed the gap by scoring on a single, a walk, and a single.
Richard Bland opened the scoring in the first after Sam Gupta hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run. In the bottom of the first inning, Wake Tech took the lead after a home run to right field and a double, each scoring one run. Warren Landreth hit a sacrifice fly, which helped the Statesmen tie the game at two in the top of the second.
The Statesmen took the lead in the top of the third when Donavan Johnson singled, scoring one run to give RBC the edge, 3-2. The Eagles were hit by a pitch, to help tie the game at three in the third. In the top of the fifth, a Wake Tech error put the Statesmen back ahead. In the bottom of the seventh, Wake Tech homered to left field to keep their hopes alive.
Richard Bland added three more runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to hang on for the win. Richard Bland collected nine hits while the Eagles had 13.
David Smith earned the win for Richard Bland. The reliever allowed one hit and zero runs over two innings, striking out three and walking none. Caleb O'Quinn started on the hill the Statesmen, and allowed three hits and two runs over one inning. Ryan Paul pitched two innings of scoreless ball. Paul gave up four hits, striking out one and walking none.
Vincent Howald went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead Richard Bland. Taloa Moefaauo and Henry Stewart led the team with two walks each. Moefaauo also stole two bases.
With the win, the Statesmen move to 2-1 overall. Richard Bland next travels to Southeastern Community College-Whiteville on Friday, February 13th and Saturday, February 14th for a three-game conference series. Game one is set for 1pm on Friday, with games two and three in a 12pm doubleheader Saturday.
