SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Women's Soccer team delivered a thrilling second-half rally on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Wake Technical Community College 3-2 at Willcox Field. With the result, the Statesmen improve to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Region 10 play.
The opening half was evenly contested but saw Wake Tech capitalize on two early opportunities to grab a 1-2 advantage. Richard Bland responded in the 24th minute when Ingrid Garcia slotted home the equalizer off a setup from Jenna Autry, briefly drawing the match level before the visitors regained the lead a minute later.
RBC came alive after the break, fueled by the energy of the "Guard The Grove" neon themed crowd. In the 78th minute, freshman forward Rhianna Pena broke through, finishing off a pass from Shani Priestly to tie the match at 2-2. Just four minutes later, Pena struck again, converting from close range on a setup from Marta Serrano to send the Statesmen in front for good.
Richard Bland controlled much of the offensive flow, while generating eight shots on frame and three corner kicks. Pena led the charge with a team-high three shots on goal, while Garcia added three shots with two on target.
Goalkeeper Piper Whitney anchored the back line with six saves in 75 minutes of action before giving way to Allyson Klotz, who preserved the lead with one save in relief.
The Statesmen will next travel to USC Sumter on Saturday, October 11th for a 3pm non-conference contest with the Fire Ants.
