Third-Quarter Surge Lifts Statesmen Past Southwest Virginia
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College women's basketball team snapped its skid in a big way Sunday afternoon, earning a 64-51 victory over Southwest Virginia Community College inside Statesman Hall. Congratulations to Ty Curry on his first win as Head Coach.
Richard Bland set the tone early, jumping out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and extending the margin to 31-22 at halftime. The Statesmen delivered their most dominant stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Southwest Virginia 26-9 to build a commanding advantage heading into the final period.
Grace Riggs led the charge with a game-high 22 points on an efficient 8-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Hazel Veloz added 13 points, while La'Niah Thornton recorded a strong all-around performance with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Nyah Barnwell provided a spark off the bench, pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with eight points.
RBC controlled the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds, and knocked down 10 three-pointers in the win. The Statesmen also shared the ball effectively, finishing with 17 assists as a team, highlighted by Arianna Zepeda's eight assists.
With the victory, Richard Bland gets back in the win column and builds momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
The Statesmen are next set to travel to Catawba Valley Community College on Wednesday, February 25th for a 5pm contest, followed by a 1pm contest against Cleveland Community College on Thursday, February 26th. Richard Bland will travel home to host Catawba Valley Community College on Friday, February 27th in a 1pm contest in the final regular season outing.
The Region 10 Tournament play-in game will take place on Monday, March 2nd. Time and opponent will be determined this weekend.
