SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College women's basketball team competed in an action packed weekend, which opened with traveling to Cape Fear Community College on Saturday, and facing Brunswick Community College on Sunday.
The Statesmen endured a challenging road weekend, falling 57-87 to Cape Fear Community College on February 14 before dropping a hard-fought 67-70 decision to Brunswick Community College on February 15. Despite the results, Richard Bland showed resilience behind strong individual performances and improved offensive execution in the second contest.
Richard Bland was led by a balanced scoring effort against Cape Fear, with Grace Riggs and Arianna Zepeda each scoring 13 points, while Micala Poe provided a spark off the bench with 15 points, including three made three-pointers. Leila Estrada tallied six points, La'Niah Thornton five, Marin Curtain four, and Hazel Veloz one in the loss. The Statesmen battled on the glass and generated second-chance opportunities but struggled to find consistent shooting rhythm throughout the contest.
The Statesmen bounced back with a much sharper offensive performance Sunday at Brunswick, knocking down 11 three-pointers and placing three players in double figures. Zepeda led all Richard Bland scorers with 22 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting, while Poe added 13 points and Leila Estrada chipped in 12. Richard Bland held a slim advantage late, but Brunswick capitalized at the free throw line and used a strong third quarter to secure the win.
The Statesmen will look to bounce back this week as they travel to No. 16 Bryant & Stratton College (VA) on Wednesday, February 18th. The game will be played at Atlantic Shores Christian School at 6:30pm.
