Four Statesmen Reach Double Figures in Hard-Fought Road Battle

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College women's basketball team fell 61-71 on the road to Guilford Technical Community College on February 10th in a high energy contest.

 

Richard Bland opened the game working to find offensive rhythm, trailing 12-20 after the first quarter. The Statesmen settled in during the second quarter, outscoring GTCC 20-16 behind balanced scoring and defensive pressure to cut the deficit to 32-36 at halftime.

 

The third quarter proved pivotal as GTCC edged Richard Bland 19-21 maintaining separation heading into the final period. Despite continued effort defensively, the Statesmen were held to 10 fourth-quarter points while GTCC added 14 to secure the 10-point win.

 

Grace Riggs led Richard Bland offensively with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds. Hazel Veloz contributed 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Micala Poe provided a strong lift off the bench with 11 points, and Leila Estrada added 10 points including two three-pointers.

 

On the glass, Richard Bland finished with 31 total rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. The Statesmen also forced 10 steals but were hindered by 22 turnovers in the contest.

 

The Statesmen will look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Cape Fear Community College on Saturday, February 14th and Brunswick Community College on Sunday, February 15th for a back-back weekend.
