Statesmen Close Out 2025 Battling in Home Matchups

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College women's basketball team battled through a challenging stretch at home last week, falling to Bryant & Stratton College (VA) and Cape Fear Community College in back-to-back contests at Statesmen Hall.

On December 16, RBC opened strong against Bryant & Stratton, leading 19–15 after the first quarter. Hazel Veloz sparked the offense with a team-high 21 points, knocking down five three-pointers and grabbing five boards, while Grace Riggs added 16 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Despite the early momentum, Bryant & Stratton surged ahead in the third quarter, outscoring the Stateswomen 17-23, and maintained control down the stretch to secure a 59-69 victory.

Richard Bland forced Bryant & Stratton into tough possessions and recorded 13 steals, but struggled from the field, shooting 27.5 percent overall and 46.7 percent from the free-throw line, which proved costly against the visitors' efficient second-half execution.

RBC returned to action on December 20 against Cape Fear Community College. Cape Fear built separation early and steadily extended its lead, taking a 56-79 decision. Grace Riggs led the Statesmen offensively with 11 points, while Nyah Barnwell and Micala Poe each chipped in eight points off the bench. Arianna Zepeda filled the stat sheet with eight points and nine assists. Jessica Reese contributed defensively with three blocks.

Despite flashes of ball movement and defensive pressure, Richard Bland was unable to slow Cape Fear's balanced attack, committing 29 turnovers and facing a consistent scoring push across all four quarters.

Richard Bland (3-9 overall, 2-6 conference) will look to regroup in the new year, with their next game on January 5th against Catawba Valley Community College. Tipoff is set for 1pm in Statesman Hall.
