Richard Bland Secures Hard-Fought Road Win Over Wake Tech
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — Richard Bland College women's basketball picked up a gritty road victory Wednesday night, using a dominant second quarter and timely defensive plays down the stretch to defeat Wake Technical Community College, 60–54.
After a slow opening frame, the Statesmen erupted for 24 points in the second quarter while holding Wake Tech to just seven, flipping a 10-15 deficit into a 34–22 halftime lead. RBC's defensive pressure, anchored by active hands and control on the glass, proved to be the difference as the Statesmen never surrendered the edge the rest of the way.
Richard Bland's frontcourt powered the effort, with Grace Riggs delivering her third double-double of the season with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists while adding 2 blocks. Nyah Barnwell battled her way to seven points and 11 rebounds, helping RBC own the boards with 47 rebounds.
The Statesmen also saw strong playmaking from Arianna Zepeda, who filled the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and three blocks in one of her most complete performances of the season. Keeva Heggins, Leila Estrada, and Hazel Veloz chipped in eight points each, with Heggins adding six rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Wake Tech made a push in the third quarter, cutting into the margin behind a 19-point period, but RBC held firm in the fourth with key defensive stops and timely scoring. Despite shooting struggles from the line, the Statesmen controlled tempo, forced turnovers, and executed enough late to close out the win.
Richard Bland (3-2 overall, 2-0 conference) returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, November 22nd to face a tough CCBC Essex, in Statesman Hall. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
