Statesmen Rally in Second Half to Secure Conference Victory
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 57–54 win over Brunswick Community College on Sunday afternoon at Statesman Hall. Trailing by nine at halftime, the Statesmen used a strong second half and key defensive stops to rally for the home victory.
Brunswick led 18-27 at the break, but the Statesmen responded with an 18-point third quarter to pull within two heading into the final period. Richard Bland continued its momentum in the fourth, outscoring the Dolphins 21–15 to complete the comeback.
Hazel Veloz paced RBC with 15 points, including four three-pointers, while adding five rebounds and four steals. Grace Riggs followed with 13 points, including the game-winning three pointer, and seven rebounds. Nyah Barnwell was a major presence on the boards, finishing with a game-high 16 rebounds and six points.
Arianna Zepeda added six points, three assists, and three steals, while Ayjianna Bonapart and Jessica Reese contributed five points each off the bench. Leila Estrada chipped in five points and four assists.
Despite shooting just 28 percent from the field and 6-41 from three, the Statesmen dominated the glass with 42 rebounds and generated 15 steals to swing the momentum in the second half.
Richard Bland (2-2) returns to action on Wednesday, November 19th as they travel to Wake Technical Community College for a 6pm conference contest.
