SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Softball team battled through an up-and-down afternoon on April 1, splitting a home doubleheader against Pitt Community College. The Statesmen fell 5-10 in game one before bouncing back with a commanding 10-3 victory in game two.
Game one saw Pitt Community College take control late, using a five-run sixth inning to pull away from Richard Bland. The Statesmen showed early fight, plating three runs in the third inning to take a brief lead. Rayna Klar led the offense in the opener, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Claudia Minetree added a triple, while Samantha Barbe drove in a run. Despite drawing five walks as a team, Richard Bland was limited to six hits. In the circle, Grace Urban started and worked five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts. Ava Balli took the loss in relief, as Pitt capitalized on defensive miscues.
The Statesmen responded with intensity in game two, erupting for five runs in the third inning to take control and secure a 10-3 win. Richard Bland jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and never looked back. The offense capitalized on opportunities throughout, scoring 10 runs on just five hits while taking advantage of Pitt's defensive struggles. Brayanna Holland provided a key spark with two RBIs, while Jaclyn Betti, Arianna Manson, Grace Urban, and Rayna Klar each drove in a run. Claudia Minetree crossed the plate three times, and the Statesmen showcased aggressive baserunning to keep pressure on the defense. Ava Balli delivered a strong performance in the circle in game two, tossing a complete game to earn the win. She struck out seven and allowed just three runs, keeping Pitt off balance throughout the contest.
The Richard Bland College Softball team next hosts Cleveland Community College on Friday, April 3rd in a 12pm conference doubleheader.
