Softball Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep at Southwest Virginia
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Softball team delivered an emphatic performance on Sunday, sweeping Southwest Virginia in a doubleheader behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive production. The Statesmen outscored their opponent 25-4 across the two games, improving their momentum as the season continues.
In game one, Richard Bland set the tone early and never looked back, securing a 9-0 shutout victory in five innings. The Statesmen plated three runs in the opening frame and continued to build their lead with consistent scoring throughout the contest. Ava Balli was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits and striking out 11 to earn her 10th win of the season. Offensively, Grace Urban led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance and four RBIs, powering the middle of the lineup. Jaina Davis scored three runs and wreaked havoc on the basepaths with three stolen bases, while Claudia Minetree added three runs and an RBI. Samantha Barbe, Rayna Klar, and Kamryn Lane also contributed RBIs in the balanced effort. Richard Bland totaled seven hits and drew four walks, capitalizing on scoring opportunities while keeping pressure on Southwest Virginia's defense.
The offensive surge continued into game two, where the Statesmen exploded for 16 runs on 15 hits in a 16-4 victory. After a steady start through the first four innings, Richard Bland broke the game open late with a six-run seventh inning to seal the sweep. Claudia Minetree delivered a standout performance, going 3-for-5 with a double, two triples, and four RBIs. Daphne Hall added three hits and three RBIs, while Samantha Montalvo and Grace Urban each drove in key runs to fuel the offense. Arianna Manson chipped in three hits, and the Statesmen showcased patience at the plate with nine walks. In the circle, Grace Urban earned the win, pitching four innings and striking out three. Marissa Anderson provided solid relief, allowing just one unearned run over the final three innings to close out the game.
The Richard Bland College Softball team next hosts Pitt Community College on Wednesday, April 1st in a 1pm doubleheader. Game two will be a "Guard the Grove" white out theme!
