SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College Softball team opened its weekend series with a strong victory but dropped the final two contests as the Statesmen went 1–2 against Catawba Valley Community College.
In game one, Richard Bland erupted for nine runs to take the opener in convincing fashion. After Catawba Valley scored in the bottom of the first, the Statesmen answered in the third inning. Daphne Hall drove in the tying run with a single before Grace Urban launched a three-run home run to give Richard Bland a 4–1 advantage. The Statesmen broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating five runs. Arianna Manson drove in a run with a single, while Kamryn Lane delivered a two-run double. RBI singles from Brayanna Holland and Emma Shelhorse capped the scoring. Urban finished with three RBIs, while Lane added two RBIs and two hits. In the circle, Ava Balli earned the win, tossing a complete-game, five-inning performance. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run while striking out six.
In game two, the Red Hawks responded using timely hitting and capitalizing on defensive miscues to secure a 2-8 win. Catawba Valley scored twice in the first inning before the Statesmen tied the game in the second. Brayanna Holland reached and later scored, and Emma Shelhorse drove in the tying run with a single. However, the Red Hawks pulled away in the third inning with a two-run home run as part of a three-run frame. Catawba Valley added additional insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Kamryn Lane led the Statesmen offensively with two hits, while Holland and Shelhorse each recorded hits and scored a run.
In game three, the series finale was tightly contested, with the Red Hawks edging the Statesmen 2-3. Richard Bland struck first in the second inning when Rayna Klar doubled to bring home Grace Urban. The teams traded runs before the Statesmen regained the lead in the fifth as Daphne Hall delivered a RBI single to score Samantha Barbe. Catawba Valley responded in the sixth inning with two runs to take the lead for good. Klar, Patricia Lett, and Barbe each recorded hits for the Statesmen, while Ava Balli pitched all six innings in the circle, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
The Richard Bland College Softball team next hosts Louisburg College on Wednesday, March 18th in a 4pm doubleheader.
