Statesmen Softball Splits with Wake Tech in High-Scoring Doubleheader
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College softball team split a doubleheader with Wake Technical Community College on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 9-15 before bouncing back with a commanding 15-3 victory in the second game on the Statesman Softball Field.
In game one, Richard Bland jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the first inning. RBI singles from Jaclyn Betti and Patricia Lett, along with an RBI walk by Allison Hebron, helped the Statesmen take a 3-0 advantage. Wake Tech answered in the third and fourth innings before a decisive eight-run fifth inning swung momentum to the visitors. The Statesmen continued to battle offensively, finishing with 12 hits. Gabby Shaver led the way with two hits and two runs scored, while Grace Urban went 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Arianna Manson drove in two runs and Natalie Campbell, Betti, Lett, and Hebron each added an RBI. Richard Bland added three runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single from Manson and an RBI walk by Angela Dreistadt, then scored twice more in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly from Samantha Montalvo and an RBI single by Campbell. Wake Tech totaled 11 hits and capitalized on seven Richard Bland errors to secure the win.
In game two, the Statesmen responded emphatically in the nightcap, exploding for 14 runs in the first two innings enroute to a 15-3 run-rule victory. Richard Bland scored four runs in the opening frame before a massive 10-run second inning broke the game open. Samantha Montalvo highlighted the inning with a two-run single, while Daphne Hall, Jaina Davis, and Arianna Manson also delivered RBI hits during the rally. Hall had a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Montalvo drove in three runs, while Grace Urban, Kamryn Lane, Jaclyn Betti, Manson, and Davis each recorded an RBI. In the circle, Ava Balli earned the win with a complete five-inning effort. She allowed just two hits and three runs—none earned—while striking out two. Richard Bland again collected 12 hits in the victory.
Richard Bland (10-10, 1-1) will next travel to Fayetteville Technical Community College on Wednesday, March 11th for a 2pm doubleheader.
