SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — Richard Bland College softball wrapped up back-to-back days of action in South Carolina with a 3-1 record, bouncing back from a tough opener to overpower USC Salkehatchie and sweeping USC Sumter in convincing fashion.
In game one against USC Salkehatchie, the Statesmen dropped a narrow 0-1 decision in the opener despite a strong outing in the circle from Marissa Anderson. Anderson went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six and issuing no walks. The lone run came in the first inning, and Salkehatchie held RBC to three hits to secure the shutout. Claudia Minetree and Brayanna Holland each doubled to account for two of the Statesmen's three hits, while Kamryn Lane and Jaina Davis swiped bases in the effort. RBC threatened at times but left five runners on base in the pitcher's duel.
In game two against USC Salkehatchie, RBC responded in emphatic fashion, erupting for 15 runs on 15 hits to split the day. The Statesmen exploded for eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. Gabby Shaver led the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored. Arianna Manson was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI, while Jaclyn Betti launched a three-run home run in the second inning. Kamryn Lane added a solo homer as part of a two-hit, multi-RBI performance. Daphne Hall chipped in two hits and two stolen bases, and RBC tallied 12 RBI in the five-inning run-rule victory. Emma Shelhorse earned the win in the circle, tossing four innings with four strikeouts, and Madison Yero closed out the final frame.
In game one against USC Sumter, the Statesmen carried the momentum into day two, edging USC Sumter 3-1 behind another strong pitching performance from Marissa Anderson. Anderson threw a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts. RBC broke through in the third inning when Shekinah Soto scored on a miscue, then added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. Allison Hebron delivered the lone RBI of the game with a seventh-inning single to score Gabby Shaver. RBC manufactured runs with aggressive baserunning, swiping three bags in the contest.
In game two against USC Sumter, RBC poured in 22 runs on 16 hits, scoring 22 runs over the first three innings to secure the run-rule victory. Kamryn Lane powered the offense with three hits and four RBI, while Arianna Manson drove in four runs of her own. Daphne Hall tallied three hits and three RBI, and Emma Shelhorse added three hits and three RBI. Jaclyn Betti and Gabby Shaver each recorded multi-hit games as RBC drew seven walks and capitalized on Sumter miscues. Ava Balli picked up the win, striking out five over four innings, and Madison Yero sealed the game with a scoreless relief appearance.
Richard Bland (7-9) will next host Mid Atlantic Chrisitan University on Saturday, February 28th in a 1pm doubleheader.
