Statesmen Split with Patriots in Home Opener

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA — The Richard Bland College softball team hosted Patrick & Henry Community College for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Statesmen dropped game one 3-6, but came out hot in game two earning an 8-4 victory.

 

In game one, Richard Bland stayed in it until the end, but the Patriots pulled away late in a 3-6 victory. The game was tied at three in the top of the seventh when the Patriots homered to right field, which scored three runs. Patrick & Henry got on the board in the fourth inning after a steal of home scored one run. Richard Bland took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jaclyn Betti singled to center field, and Kamryn Lane doubled to center field, each scoring one run. Rayna Klar, Betti, and Lane each collected one hit for Richard Bland. Marissa Anderson opened the game for Richard Bland. The starter surrendered four hits and one run over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Ava Balli and Angela Dreistadt came in in relief.

 

In game two, the Statesmen rallied to best the Patriots 8-4. RBC trailed by as many as four runs during the game. Patrick & Henry opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two singles. The Patriots added one run in the second on a passed ball. A groundout extended the lead to 0-4 in the top of the third. Richard Bland flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring eight runs on eight hits, including a home run to center field by Rayna Klar to take the lead, 8-4. Klar went 2-for-4 in the game, while Betti and Daphne Hall each collected two hits for Richard Bland. Grace Urban struck out 10 batters on the day. The pitcher surrendered five hits and four runs over seven innings while walking two.

 

The Statesmen (2-6) will travel to Bryant & Stratton College (VA) tomorrow, Wednesday, February 18th for a doubleheader with the Bobcats. First pitch is set for 11am.
